ChatGPT Ads are now live in India, and it’s already shaping up to be a big turning point for advertising here. The way brands reach and engage with people is about to change. Until now, most digital advertising has revolved around search engines and social platforms. ChatGPT Ads open up a new space, one where your ad shows up while someone is actively researching, comparing, or trying to make a decision.

At whiteDigital, we’re already running ChatGPT Ads for clients in other countries, and now that they’re live in India too, this is the right time for businesses here to get in early.

ChatGPT Ads were first tested in the US back in February 2026, then expanded to close to 40 countries before arriving in India, and self-serve access for Indian advertisers opens shortly, on September 4.

Getting into a new advertising platform early always has an advantage. You learn how your audience responds before your competitors even start.

What makes ChatGPT Ads different from search or social ads?

Search ads work off keywords: someone types something in, and the ad matches what they typed. Social ads like Meta work differently, since they’re built around audience interests and behaviour.

ChatGPT Ads work off something else entirely: conversation and context.

People use ChatGPT to think through decisions: comparing options, asking for recommendations, working through a problem. That’s a different kind of intent than a quick search. It’s context-rich, and it’s exactly the moment OpenAI is trying to help advertisers reach.

For advertisers, that means shifting focus away from just keywords and toward understanding what a person is actually trying to solve.

What can we learn from other countries?

Countries like the US, UK, and several across Europe had ChatGPT Ads before India did, and there’s a lot to learn from how those early campaigns played out: how brands positioned themselves, how users responded to ads inside a conversation, and what actually worked.

Indian advertisers don’t have to start from zero. We can build on what’s already been tested elsewhere and apply it here.

Which businesses should try ChatGPT Ads?

This isn’t the right channel for every client, and there’s no need to rush every account onto it. It works best for businesses whose customers take time to research and compare before buying. That includes:

  • Ecommerce businesses that need comparison before purchasing.
  • SaaS companies that have higher competition in the software business
  • Educational institutions that offer various courses and training.
  • Travel businesses that help in sorting out travel plans for customers
  • Financial companies that target users who search and ask for ideas on financial products and services.
  • Health care service providers that are allowed under the platform terms and policies
  • Businesses that take care of multiple service providers
  • Tech businesses that bring in new products

A quick note on financial services and healthcare: OpenAI’s ad policy is currently more restrictive for these two categories outside the US, so eligibility for those clients is worth confirming directly in Ads Manager before you commit to a campaign.

ChatGPT ads in India are currently live for Free and Go tier (₹399/month) users only. People on Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise plans won’t see any ads. Self-serve access, where any advertiser can set up and run their own campaigns, opens on September 4, 2026, with a minimum daily budget of ₹725.

Good to know before you start

Ads appear clearly labelled and show up below ChatGPT’s actual answer, not mixed into it. OpenAI has been clear that ads don’t influence what ChatGPT says, and advertisers don’t get access to anyone’s chat history or personal data.

This matters for how you plan: budgets are still on the smaller side, so early campaigns are best treated as a test, not a channel you scale into immediately.

Getting a campaign ready

Setting a budget and writing an ad isn’t where this starts. A campaign needs a proper account structure and clear objectives from day one. Know who your high-value customer is and what you expect the ad to reach them for, and be clear on what counts as a conversion before anything goes live.

From there, put together the basics: brand name, headline, description, a landing page, and image assets. This is what makes the ad look credible rather than like a fresh, untested placement. And because someone clicking a ChatGPT ad is doing so mid-conversation, expecting a direct answer to what they just asked, the landing page needs to deliver exactly that, not a generic homepage.

Measurement is harder, but more important than ever

Proving business value is one of the biggest challenges with any new ad channel, and ChatGPT Ads are no different. Before scaling budget, get conversion tracking set up properly.

That’s what tells you which campaigns, which users, and which approach are actually driving results, not just impressions.
