When I look at Google Ads campaign performance, I don’t focus only on clicks and impressions. I also pay attention to how much each click costs and whether the clicks bring valuable leads.
Here I see Google works like an auction. Every time someone searches for something like “criminal lawyer near me”. Google runs an auction to decide which ads are shown and where they appear. Businesses that are targeting the group of people compete for these chances, and their competition can change how much an advertiser pays for each click.
What I find important is that cost per click can increase even when an advertiser has not changed the campaign settings or daily budget. So, why does this happen?
How More Advertisers Means More Competition in Google Ads
When I’m reviewing the Google Ads campaign for a “Law Firm” that offers criminal defense services. If more law firms start targeting the same searches, they have to compete for similar potential customers.
For example, when someone searches for “criminal defence lawyer near me”. Several law firms want their ads to appear. If competitors become stronger with their bids, the cost of competing for the searches may increase.
However, I wouldn’t assume that more competitors automatically mean higher CPC. The CPC also depends on factors such as bids, ad quality, search query, and the auction itself.
Why CPC Can Rise Even When I Make No Changes in the Google Ads Campaign
One thing I keep in mind when reviewing the campaign performance is that advertisers don’t control every factor in an auction. Competitors can change their bids, launch new campaigns, or become more active at different times.
For example, If the average CPC rises from $20 to $40. I wouldn’t immediately conclude that the campaign is performing poorly. Instead of that I would analyze why the cost per click is changed and whether the campaign is still generating leads. The important point is to understand is, driving the increase before making changes.
How Rise in CPC Affects Even Budget Remains Same
When CPC increase with the same budget can bring fewer visitors to the website. For example, if I were reviewing a Google Ads campaign performance with a daily budget of $200,
- At an average CPC of $20, the budget could buy around 10 clicks
- At an average CPC of $40, the budget could bring around 5 clicks
When I review this kind of change, I wouldn’t judge a campaign by click volume alone. I would also check whether the clicks are turning into enquiries.
What I Do When CPC Increases
If I noticed a rise in CPC, I wouldn’t immediately increase the campaign budget. First, I analyze the campaign to understand what has changed. Then check auction insights for changes in competition, review search terms to identify the traffic, and check whether the ads match what the customers are looking for.
I would also review the landing pages to make sure visitors can understand the service and contact the business easily. I also review the calls, form submissions, lead quality, and conversions. Increasing CPC may be manageable if the campaign is still bringing valuable leads.
How to Check Competition in the Google Ads Auction Insights
Google Ads has an option called the Auction Insights report. This helps to compare ads with others who are competing in the auction. I can use this report to see which advertisers are showing up often or appearing above my ads.
For example, if a competitor starts showing up alongside my ads frequently, it might mean competition has increased. Keep in mind the report doesn’t show bids of your competitors. Here, cost can also change because of bidding strategy, ad position, search terms, and other relevant factors.
To see your auction insights, go to Campaigns. Select the campaign you want to see the auction insights. Under the Insights and reports section, look for Auction Insights.

Final Thoughts
Google Ads CPC can increase when more competitors target the same customers. This can happen even if you haven’t changed the campaign settings or the budget. I’m not focused only on CPC; I also review the overall campaign performance and the lead quality. The goal is not just clicks. The goal is to get more customers from the ads.
