Facebook & Google Prohibits Medical Face Masks Ads as COVID-19 Spread Continues

Aside global death toll gradually increasing, there is a rise in false claims aboutcoronavirus (COVID-19) prevention and price gouging. Facebook has decided to temporarily ban facemask ads tostop profiting from disinformation.Following Facebook, Google as wellinitiated the same action globally to avoid those misleading coronavirus claims.

Initially Facebook announced, they are temporarily banning the ads for medical face masks, as part of a concerted effort to prevent unscrupulous vendors from exploiting public coronavirus panic. Later in addition to masks, ads and commerce listings for hand sanitizer, surface disinfecting wipes and COVID-19 testing kits are also banned.

Rob Leathern, head of the trust & integrity team for ads and business products at Facebook, says

"We're banning ads and commerce listings selling medical face masks. We're monitoring COVID19 closely and will make necessary updates to our policies if we see people trying to exploit this public health emergency. We'll start rolling out this change in the days ahead."

Similarly, Google started noticing a recent rise in ads for face masks running against coronavirus related keywords, many with misleading healthcare claims. Hence, Google also cracked down the advertising for face masks during the coronavirus epidemic. The company began banning ads for face masks. The ban applies to all advertisers, including those who promote long-running campaigns of surgical masks since it falls under the "sensitive events" section of Google's guidelines.

A Google spokesperson says to CNBC;

"Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to temporarily ban all medical face mask ads. We're actively monitoring the situation and will continue to take action as needed to protect users."

Google's decision to ban ads for medical face masks comes just days after Facebook did the same on its platform.

In addition, Adam Mosseri (head of Instagram) says: "Supplies are short, prices are up, and we're against people exploiting this public health emergency. We'll start rolling this out over the next few days."

Currently Googleis restricting ads for face masks. But it will continue in the future depending on the Covid-19 situation escalates.
